On our various sojourns in China during the 1990s, my wife Sylvia and I had many cultural encounters. These ranged from helping students solve problems to efforts to fathoming how the wording of an English billboard had come to be. During our year in Xi'an, 1996-97, teaching at the Xi'an Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, we began to think about the possibility of working in China as consultants. We imagined ourselves moving from place to place, helping to improve the level of English usage and offering other kinds of language and cultural services. While this imagined project turned out to be a pipe-dream, it produced a name for such an enterprise: Culture Bridge. A few years later we started an enterprise with a similar name, China Bridge. Our major activity has been organizing travel in China. But this has not been the only activity for China Bridge. During our year in Xi'an we met two people who have become important in our activities in cultural exchange. One is Ding Jitang, art teacher and an organizer of the Huxian Peasant Painters Association, headquartered in a rural county about 40 miles southwest of Xi'an. Mr. Ding operates the association's gallery in downtown Xi'an (located on the lane that leads to the Great Mosque, near the Drum Tower). We visited Mr. Ding other times as well, and by the time we left Xi'an that summer, we had agreed to exhibit peasant paintings from Hu County. And we have done this for the past several years. (We don't take commissions for sales, only expenses.)
